Dr. Susan O’Mahony is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, with special interests in breast surgery, facial plastic surgery (including skin cancers of the face), body contouring and paediatric plastic surgery. She is also a Craniomaxillofacial Surgeon specialising in the treatment of cleft lip and palate. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and an active member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Australia New Zealand Society of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons and the Australian Cleft Lip and Palate Association.

Dr. Susan O’Mahony graduated with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Queensland in 1998. She completed her residency in Queensland before travelling to the UK, training in General and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for two years.
In 2001 she was appointed to a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship and gained a Masters Degree from the University of Cambridge in England, researching the problem of Lymphoedema (Arm Swelling) in Breast Cancer patients as a side effect of their treatment. She has published widely on this and other Breast Cancer related topics (see publications). Her research led to the degree of Doctorate of Medicine (MD), for which she was awarded the Ralph Nobel Prize for the best clinical Doctorate, also from the University of Cambridge.
On her return to Queensland Dr O’Mahony completed her preliminary surgical training and entered Advanced Surgical Training in General Surgery before being accepted onto the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Training Program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She undertook her Specialist training at the Princess Alexandra, Mater, Royal Brisbane and Greenslopes Hospitals in Brisbane, before being awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
In addition to her general Plastic Surgery expertise Dr O’Mahony has a subspecialty interest in Facial Plastic Surgery and Paediatric Plastic Surgery. She completed a two year Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Fellowship program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Brisbane and New Zealand, gaining particular expertise in the treatment of congenital problems such as Cleft Lip & Palate and Craniofacial abnormalities, Facial Reconstruction following trauma and Cosmetic Facial Plastic Surgery.

Dr O’Mahony also has a Public Hospital appointment as a Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive and Craniofacial Surgeon at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Brisbane.
Having received extensive education in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery over many years, Dr O’Mahony understands the importance of sharing her expertise. She was the Supervisor of Plastic Surgery Trainees at the Queensland Children’s Hospital for 8 years and is actively involved in the teaching of Medical Students from all Queensland medical schools, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, Junior Doctors, trainee Plastic Surgeons and other Medical Colleagues.
Dr O’Mahony is a senior examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for the Fellowship exam in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, contributing significant time annually to maintaining the exceptionally high standards of specialist Surgeons we are fortunate to have here in Australia.
